Course Description
The course comprises lectures and related seminars twice a week, aimed at:
- Synchronic theoretical and practical studies of the lexical level of Contemporary English, of lexicographical sources, of the system of word-formation processes, semantic functions and current tendencies in the dynamism of English lexis and phraseology, with cross-linguistic comparisons to Slovak (or another language, if native), wherever relevant or of interest, focusing on characteristic or problematic lexical and discourse areas, including faux amis, phraseologisms and stylistic and pragmatic differences.
- Specially for students in the field of translation and interpreting, there will be included in which, based on linguistic and translation theory, the contrastive linguistic and translation skills will be exercised and further developed.
- Some diachronic aspects of the lexis will be included in view of clarifying and better understanding contemporary linguistic forms, subsystems and their communicative functions.
Prerequisites
None, only at least level B2, but preferably C1 English language skillsLearning Outcomes
By the end of the course the students will have better knowledge and deeper understanding of the English lexical system. They will be able to analyse, synthesize and polemically discuss theoretical as well as linguistic issues and relationships, and will have an improved command of English for academic as well as pragmatic purposes, as needed namely for translators and interpreters.Course Requirements
For each seminar the students should do all the assignments, i.e. study the texts from the list of required reading, try to find answers to the questions, prepare and bring up in class their own questions and polemic views concerning the material, and do all the exercises, assignments and other tasks.
Thorough preparation for each seminar and active participation in it within the discussions of the themes and presentation of assignments is essential. Non-compliance with this may count as absence or result in a lower grade.
During the term each student will have one 15-20 minute ptp presentation on a theme specified at the seminars. After a brief theoretical outline, the student’s own research, analysis and interpretation of the linguistic data within the theme should be coherently and meaningfully presented in good English, including, where relevant, also some contrastive cross-linguistic observations.
There will be a final test on theoretical as well as practical linguistic issues dealt with and assigned during the term. The students are required to take it at the time scheduled.
The evaluation will be based on:
• Continuous work in the seminars 40 %
• Presentation 20 %
• Final test 40 %
Presentation evaluation:
• Adequacy of content and logical structuring – 3 %
• Reliability of data and theoretical considerations – 4 %
• Quality of analysis and interpretation of findings – 7 %
• Level of English – 3 %
• Level of presentation skills – 3 %
Taking into account active attendance, the presentation and the final test results, the overall grading will be as follows:
Grading scale:
A 90 % and above
B 83 % and above
C 76 % and above
D 69 % and above
E 60 % and above
