Course Description and Requirements

Course Description

The aim of the course is to build upon the previous studies of English lexicology and lexicography and extend them by focusing on the dynamism of language, the motivation of lexical units and the recent developments in the English lexis. The course is designed to contribute to the linguistic and academic communication skills and provide grounds for an advanced exchange of ideas on language and on the selected themes.

Course Requirements and Evaluation

Attendance at the seminars, including arriving on time, is required and indispensable for successful completion of the course. Any absence may disqualify a student, unless it is caused by a legitimate reason duly announced to the lecturer, if possible in advance, and compensated for by additional work arranged with the lecturer.

Preparation for each seminar and active participation in it is essential. Non-compliance with this may count as absence or result in a lower grade.

Any other policies, i.e. academic honesty, the need for mutual communication if the student has any problems concerning course work, preparation of assignments, etc., will be specified at the first seminar.

For each seminar the students are required to do all the assignments, i.e. study the assigned theoretical and linguistic materials and do all the other scheduled tasks.

There will be a final test, and the students are required to take it at the time scheduled.

The evaluation will be based on:

  • Continuous work in the seminars 50 %
  • Assignment 20 %
  • Final test 20 %

Taking into account active attendance and the final test results, the overall grading will be as follows:

GRADING SCALE
A 90 % and above
B 83 % and above
C 76 % and above
D 69 % and above
E 60 % and above
